Fun Dating and Friendship Services

Dating should be fun!  Often there is just too much pressure which doesn't help.  Here are a couple of our favorite low-key get acquainted sites.

• Friendster - a cool idea.  You have to be invited by a friend to join.  Once you have joined you are automatically placed on that persons friends list and you can start emailing those people.  The idea is that the bests way to meet and date is by introduction through a group of friends that already know each other.  We like this idea!

• Hot or Not -  Is this a dating site?  Well kind of!  You rate the attractiveness of a persons photo.  Photos are placed by the individual who want to be rated, so we see no harm in that.  If you find someone you like in your area you can click on the "Meet me at Hot or Not" link and for a small fee join up.  Low key - another site we like.

• MySpace -  MySpace is the new standard of Social Networking.  You get to see and chat with friends your friends have chatted with.  This came along after Friendster but is kicking its behind.  Fun, Free... if you haven't tried it - give it a go.

Online Dating Services

Let me be perfectly honest about something... dating online can be a great experience, but it can also be a nightmare.  Make sure you read our box above on "Dating Safely".  You want to meet new people, and the internet makes it easy... but until you know them and have your references; go easy, take it slow and always take company until you feel comfortable.

1. Yahoo Personals - Yahoo used to be a lot of fun - back when it was free.  Now it's just another big business.  Personally I'd say the site is very average.  While it attracts a lot of visitors many of the ads are placed by non-paying members.  So your "return" rate to your replies will probably be low.  Also they will email you weekly ads of people who have not even signed on in Months.  You decide the value.

2. Match.com - The 9,000lb Gorilla of the online dating world.  The quality of members and "reply" rate is much higher.  But the site is managed by cocky jerks.  Don't expect any kind of real customer service.  And be very careful with billing and cancellation.  These guys are quick to take your money and slow to deliver.  Simple Changes to your account and greeting can take over a week.  You decide the value.

3. American Singles - The layout is nice, the quality of people is as good as any.  Probably our favorite choice for big commercial sites.

4. E-Harmony  -  If you are serious about meeting someone for companionship then go for it.  This site is really targeted at the 25+ crowd whereas the social networking sites are for the younger crowd.

5. Chemistry.com, True.com and on and on.
